A public Austrian university built around computing across disciplines

IT:U Interdisciplinary Transformation University Austria is a new public university in Linz built around a different approach to digital education: computing is treated as a connecting discipline rather than a subject that exists on its own. Its programmes bring computer science together with areas such as health, society, design, natural sciences and industry, with students working on real-world problems through project-based learning. 

That makes IT:U particularly relevant to graduates who want to move towards AI, computing or digital transformation without necessarily coming from a conventional computer science background.

Why IT:U stands out

An interdisciplinary approach to computing

IT:U's current flagship programme is the MSc in Interdisciplinary Computing, a 120-ECTS master's taught in English. Applicants can come from technology, natural sciences, social sciences, medicine, humanities, arts or economics, provided they meet the programme's requirements. 

Students choose from four areas of specialisation:

• Designing Interactions 
• Digital Earth, Society and Networks 
• Digital Humanities, Health and Life Sciences 
• Future Industries 
The programme combines computing with these fields rather than treating them as separate academic tracks. 

Learning takes place through projects and labs

Instead of relying primarily on large lecture halls, IT:U organises much of its learning around small interdisciplinary teams, project work and LearnLabs. These include facilities for areas such as robotics, virtual reality, motion capture, data and human-computer interaction. 

The model is also developing through industry collaboration. In September 2026, IT:U and Infineon Austria opened three new LearnLabs at Infineon's Linz site, giving master's students access to additional development and manufacturing facilities for interdisciplinary projects. 

A young university with a deliberately small portfolio

IT:U is still at an early stage of its development. At present, its academic offering consists of one master's programme and three doctoral programmes, while bachelor's degrees are still being developed. 

That is important when comparing IT:U with established Austrian universities such as JKU, TU Wien or TU Graz. IT:U isn't intended to provide a broad catalogue of undergraduate subjects; its current focus is much narrower and centred on digital transformation and interdisciplinary computing.

A close connection with JKU

IT:U also has a formal partnership with Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU). The two universities jointly offer the PhD programme in Digital Transformation in Learning, with doctoral students supervised by academics from both institutions. Their wider cooperation includes research, education and shared infrastructure.

What can you study at IT:U?

The main programme for international master's applicants is:

MSc Interdisciplinary Computing

• 120 ECTS 
• English-taught 
• Four semesters 
• Project-based and personalised learning 
• Four specialisation areas 
• Bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS or equivalent 
• Applications open to graduates from a range of academic backgrounds 

IT:U also offers doctoral programmes in Computational X, Digital Transformation in Learning and Interdisciplinary Computing. 

For bachelor's students, however, IT:U is not currently an option: its bachelor's programmes are still under development. 

Career opportunities and student value

The MSc is designed for students who want to work where computing intersects with another field. Depending on their specialisation, students can develop expertise relevant to areas such as AI, data analysis, robotics, digital health, human-computer interaction, digital networks and advanced industrial technologies. 

The university's first master's cohort began in October 2025 with 40 students selected from 325 applications across 25 countries. The international cohort included students from India and several other countries. 

IT:U has also introduced a rolling admissions system. Applications can be submitted throughout the year, with students beginning their studies in either the March or October intake. 

Why students from Kerala may consider IT:U

For a Kerala graduate, IT:U could be particularly interesting if you already have a bachelor's degree but want to move into AI, computing or digital transformation from a different academic starting point.

The programme is taught in English, and the university explicitly accepts applicants from non-technical backgrounds. That opens a route for suitably qualified graduates in areas such as engineering, science, economics, medicine, social sciences or humanities to explore technology through an interdisciplinary master's. 

Cost is another attraction. IT:U currently states that its regular study period is tuition-free, although students still have other costs associated with studying and living in Austria. Tuition can apply if students continue beyond the permitted study period and tolerance semesters, so "free education" should not be interpreted as zero overall study cost.

Is IT:U right for you?

IT:U may suit you if you:

• Already hold a bachelor's degree and want to move towards computing or AI 
• Prefer project-based and collaborative learning 
• Want to combine technology with another academic or professional field 
• Are interested in areas such as AI, robotics, digital health or human-computer interaction 
• Want an English-taught master's at a public Austrian university 

It may not be the right choice if you:

• Are looking for a bachelor's degree 
• Want a conventional computer science curriculum with a large range of established specialisations 
• Prefer a long-established university with an extensive alumni network 
• Are looking specifically for a broad range of undergraduate programmes 

IT:U is still developing as an institution, so students should consider its newness and distinctive academic model when comparing it with established Austrian universities.
