Kyungdong University

Kyungdong University's roots trace back to 1981, when Dr. Chun Jae-wook founded Sokcho Technical College in South Korea's Gangwon province. That institution was renamed twice over the following decades before Dr. Chun founded Kyungdong University itself as a separate institution in 1997. In 2012, South Korea's Ministry of Education approved merging the two schools under the Kyungdong name, bringing their combined history and infrastructure into a single private university.

Kyungdong now operates across three distinct campuses built around different academic missions: a Metropolitan campus in Yangju City near Seoul, a Medical campus in Wonju City, and a Global campus spanning Goseong and Sokcho. The university enrols roughly 7,800 students in total, including around 650 international students.

Why Kyungdong Stands Out

Kyungdong's Medical campus in Wonju gives its Nursing and Physical Therapy programmes a dedicated, health-sciences-focused environment — rather than folding them into a general arts-and-sciences campus. That structural separation matters for students specifically targeting healthcare fields, since the campus and its facilities are purpose-built around clinical and health-science training rather than shared with unrelated departments.

A few more specifics that set Kyungdong apart:

  • Operates three separate, purpose-built campuses (Metropolitan, Medical, Global) rather than a single general campus, letting each focus on a distinct academic mission
  • Offers dedicated bachelor's-level international programmes in Nursing, Computer Engineering, and Physical Therapy
  • Runs master's-level programmes in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, International Business Administration, and International Hospitality and Tourism Management
  • English-taught pathways are available (minimum IELTS 5.5, TOEFL 71, or CEFR B2), alongside Korean-taught courses for students who meet TOPIK level 3
  • A private university with a four-decade institutional history, rather than a newly established school

Popular Programmes

Kyungdong's international programme lineup is deliberately focused rather than broad, concentrating on fields with clear career pathways:

  • Nursing — based at the Medical campus in Wonju, Kyungdong's most in-demand international programme
  • Computer Engineering
  • Physical Therapy
  • Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (Master's)
  • International Business Administration (Master's)
  • International Hospitality and Tourism Management (Master's)

Published annual tuition for international students runs around 11.5 million KRW (roughly ₹6.8–7 lakh, though this should be converted and confirmed at current exchange rates) for bachelor's programmes, and around 14.4 million KRW for master's programmes — figures that should always be verified directly with us before committing, since published fees can vary by programme and are revised periodically.

Career Opportunities & Student Value

Kyungdong's Nursing programme benefits directly from being housed on a dedicated Medical campus, giving students access to a health-sciences-focused environment and clinical exposure rather than nursing being treated as one department among many unrelated ones. For Computer Engineering and the university's newer AI and Data Science master's programme, Kyungdong offers an entry point into South Korea's technology sector at a tuition level considerably below Seoul's most prestigious universities.

As with many mid-tier Korean private universities, students should go in with realistic expectations about name recognition outside Korea — Kyungdong's value proposition is affordable, programme-specific training in in-demand fields like nursing and healthcare, rather than broad global prestige.

Why Students from Kerala Are Looking at Kyungdong

Nursing remains one of the most consistently in-demand fields among Kerala students abroad, and Kyungdong's dedicated Medical campus and specific international Nursing programme make it a relevant option for that exact demand, at a tuition level meaningfully lower than many Western nursing programmes. South Korea's broader appeal — a developed economy, growing demand for skilled healthcare workers, and pathways for graduates to build a career either in Korea or elsewhere — adds to the case for students specifically targeting nursing or allied health fields.

Families should treat Kyungdong as a programme-specific choice rather than a general-prestige pick: it's a solid, affordable option for Nursing, Computer Engineering, or Physical Therapy specifically, not a broad alternative to Korea's top-ranked national universities.

Is Kyungdong Right for You?

Kyungdong could be a strong fit if:

  • you're specifically interested in Nursing or Physical Therapy and want a dedicated Medical-campus environment
  • you're pursuing Computer Engineering or the newer AI and Data Science master's track
  • affordability is a significant factor, and you're comfortable prioritising it over a globally prestigious name
  • you meet the English-taught pathway requirements (IELTS 5.5 / TOEFL 71 / CEFR B2) or are working toward TOPIK level 3 for Korean-taught courses
  • you're open to a smaller, private university rather than one of Korea's larger national universities
