Le Cordon Bleu was founded here, in Paris, in 1895, by Marthe Distel, a journalist and publisher who had started a magazine called "La Cuisinière Cordon Bleu." Her first cooking demonstration, held on 15 October 1895, was also the first ever staged on an electric stove in France — a small but genuinely specific historical first. This gives our France portfolio a direct link to the Le Cordon Bleu Wellington campus already on our site: Paris is the original school from which the entire global network grew, now present in more than 20 countries with over 50 institutes.
The name itself carries history that predates the school by three centuries. In the 16th century, King Henry III created the Order of the Holy Spirit, whose members wore a medallion on a blue ribbon — "un cordon bleu" — and the phrase came to signify excellence long before it was attached to a cooking school.
Why Le Cordon Bleu Paris Stands Out
This is the flagship, founding campus of the entire Le Cordon Bleu network, and in June 2016, it moved into a newly built home by the Seine in Paris's 15th arrondissement, close to the Eiffel Tower. The purpose-built facility spans 4,000 square metres dedicated entirely to culinary arts and hotel management, and welcomes more than 1,000 students.
A few specifics worth knowing:
- Julia Child, who would go on to become one of the most famous culinary figures in American history, studied at the Paris school in 1948 — a genuine, well-documented piece of the school's own history, not a marketing claim
- In 1984, the Cointreau family, descendants of the founding families behind Rémy Martin and Cointreau liqueurs, took over the school's presidency, bringing a deep connection to French food and beverage heritage into its leadership
- Recognised directly by the French Ministry of Education, giving the Paris campus specific national accreditation standing distinct from how individual campuses elsewhere are regulated under their own countries' systems
- Teaching is led by Michelin-starred chefs and Meilleurs Ouvriers de France, a prestigious French craftsmanship title awarded to the country's most accomplished practitioners in their field
- The school trains roughly 20,000 students a year across its global network, representing more than 90 nationalities
Popular Programmes
Le Cordon Bleu Paris offers training across the full range of culinary, pastry, and hospitality disciplines:
- Le Grand Diplôme — combining cuisine and pastry training, the institution's signature credential
- Diplôme de Cuisine and Diplôme de Pâtisserie — dedicated tracks in cuisine and pastry, respectively
- Bread-Making (Boulangerie)
- Wine and Spirits, including a dedicated oenology course
- Hospitality and Restaurant Management
- Shorter culinary workshops — ranging from introductions to French cuisine through to specialised pastry and bread-making sessions, open to both serious students and food enthusiasts without prerequisites
Career Opportunities & Student Value
Studying at the founding campus means training inside the city most closely associated with the culinary tradition Le Cordon Bleu teaches — French gastronomy's own home. Instruction from Michelin-starred chefs and Meilleurs Ouvriers de France gives students direct exposure to professionals working at the top of their field, not instructors removed from active practice.
Le Cordon Bleu's global alumni network and international brand recognition carry real weight when graduates apply for roles in restaurants, hotels, and hospitality groups worldwide, since the Paris credential is recognised as the origin point of the entire Le Cordon Bleu name.
Why Students from Kerala Are Looking at Le Cordon Bleu Paris
For Kerala students specifically drawn to classical French culinary training, studying at the original Paris campus offers something our Wellington listing can't: training at the literal birthplace of the Le Cordon Bleu name, in the city most synonymous with French gastronomy itself. The school's history, including training figures as significant as Julia Child, gives the credential a weight tied directly to more than a century of continuous reputation.
Students should note that coursework can be completed in either French or English depending on the specific programme, so it's worth confirming the language of instruction for your intended course before applying.
