The University of Adelaide is Now Adelaide University

The University of Adelaide, founded in 1874, has merged with the University of South Australia to form a single new institution: Adelaide University, which officially opened on 29 January 2026. The University of Adelaide Act 1971 was formally repealed after 31 March 2026, meaning the university no longer operates as a separate institution.

Students who previously enrolled at the University of Adelaide have transitioned to Adelaide University, continuing in their existing programme or an equivalent one, with individual academic support through the change. Adelaide University carries forward the University of Adelaide's 150-year academic legacy, alongside that of the University of South Australia, as a member of Australia's Group of Eight — the country's group of leading research-intensive universities.
