Germany removes airport transit visa requirement for Indian nationals travelling via German airports
Indian passport holders no longer require an Airport Transit Visa (ATV) when travelling through a German airport on their way to a third country. The new rule came into effect on 3 June 2026, following an official announcement by the German government.
The change means that Indian travellers can now transit through German airports such as Frankfurt and Munich without applying for a separate airport transit visa, provided they remain within the airport's international transit area and continue their journey to another country.
For students planning to study abroad, the update is particularly helpful. Germany is one of Europe's busiest aviation hubs, and many international flights to destinations across Europe, the UK and North America involve a transit through German airports. The new policy removes an additional visa requirement, making travel planning simpler and reducing paperwork for many Indian students.
What this means for students
This change applies only to airport transit. Students travelling to Germany for higher education will still require the appropriate German student visa before entering the country. However, those simply changing flights at a German airport en route to another destination can now enjoy a smoother transit experience without needing a separate Airport Transit Visa.
